Hostgator offers linux and windows hosting. All their packages come with all the features needed for a serious website. Baby and Swamp packages allow unlimited domains(add on), which makes a lot of sense if you have multiple websites. They use cPanel, which is the best control panel around. You get Fantastico script installer which will install most of the popular open source scripts with few clicks.

The only con to Hostgator is that they don't offer a free domain like some other web hosts are offering now.But if you think of it as a small annual fee, it's not much when you compare it to the overall web hosting costs. 

It will cost you $15 to buy a domain name from Hostgator but I recommend that you buy your domain from a third party like Godaddy first which will cost you anywhere from $0.99 - $9.99 yearly.

Then to to Hostgator and put in the name of the doamin that you already bought and they will take care of the rest save one. You will have to put in Hostgator's name servers on your domain name at your 3rd party domain name host. It will usually take less than 24 hours to resolve your domain name - I've actually seen it resolve in a couple of hours. Hostgator supports PHP4 & 5, SSH, Cron jobs, Python, Ruby On Rails etc. Also, all the packages include enough POP3 accounts(20 for Hatchling and unlimited for others).
